Tirana, the capital of Albania, is a city that can be easily explored on foot. Here’s a walking tour itinerary that will take you through some of the most interesting sights and attractions in the city:
Skanderbeg Square: Start your tour at the heart of the city, Skanderbeg Square. This is the largest square in Tirana and is surrounded by important buildings such as the National History Museum, the Opera House, and the Clock Tower.
Et’hem Bey Mosque: Walk a few blocks east to reach the beautiful Et’hem Bey Mosque. This mosque was built in the 18th century and is one of the oldest buildings in the city. It’s still an active mosque, so make sure to dress modestly if you plan to enter.
Pazari i Ri: From the mosque, head south to reach Pazari i Ri, the main market in Tirana. This is a great place to experience the local culture and try some traditional Albanian food.
Blloku neighborhood: Continue walking south to reach the Blloku neighborhood. This was once a restricted area for the communist elite, but now it’s a trendy neighborhood with a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants.
Pyramid of Tirana: From Blloku, walk west to reach the Pyramid of Tirana. This building was once a museum honoring Albania’s communist leader, Enver Hoxha, but it’s now abandoned and in disrepair. It’s a controversial landmark, but it’s still a fascinating example of the country’s recent history.
National Art Gallery: Continue walking west to reach the National Art Gallery. This is Albania’s premier art museum, located in a beautiful building in the city center. It houses an impressive collection of modern and contemporary Albanian art, as well as works by international artists.
Grand Park of Tirana: Finally, walk a few blocks north to reach the Grand Park of Tirana. This is the largest park in the city and is a great place to relax and enjoy the green space. It features walking paths, lakes, and a botanical garden.
